FERDINAND’S CUNNING PLAN

After they seized the San Antonio, the leaders of the mutiny sent a list of demands.

The list enraged Ferdinand. He felt like they were close to a breakthrough! How could they quit now? But he was ready to deal with them.

He agreed to discuss the mutineers’ terms onboard one of their ships, but instead of heading for the San Antonio, Ferdinand sent a boat full of men to the Victoria.

Now that the Victoria was under control, he had to deal with the San Antonio and the Concepción. Ferdinand’s three ships (Trinidad, Santiago, and Victoria) changed position to block the mouth of the bay. The Concepción and the San Antonio, positioned deeper in the harbor, couldn’t escape, but they were too far away for cannon fire to reach them.

The mutineers were still refusing to surrender, so that night, one of Magellan’s men sneaked onboard the Concepción and cut the cable connecting the ship to its anchor. The crew of the Concepción woke up the next morning to find their ship had drifted right up to the Trinidad.

Ferdinand opened fire and his men threw grappling hooks to draw the Concepción closer. Once Ferdinand’s men were aboard, the mutineers didn’t have much trouble switching their allegiance back to Ferdinand.

Most of the leaders of the mutiny met very unpleasant ends: tortured, chopped to pieces, and their body parts left as a warning on the beach at St. Julian.

All forty of the men who joined the mutiny were condemned to death, though when Ferdinand realized he wouldn’t have enough crew to sail the ships, he promptly changed the sentence to hard labor!

But when two men tried to stage yet another mutiny, Ferdinand couldn’t bring himself to execute them. One was a priest, and Ferdinand was too religious to kill a man of God (though not too religious to chop up the other ringleaders). The other was Cartagena. How could he execute the son of one of the most powerful men in Spain?

Ferdinand’s solution? He put the two men ashore in the barren, icy wilderness of St. Julian . . . and sailed off without them.
